Video games began as arcades. You would go to a specific place with some quarters, and leave when you were out to go back home until you decided to return. It was an event in the day. Things have changed since then. Since the development of home consoles, online play, video game tournaments, community modding and forums, etc., video games have become their own lifestyle. You start playing as a kid, and they tell stories, with tangible lessons that you then experience and discuss alongside the community of that video game. And remember. Within this era of gaming, we can no longer ignore the elephant in the room that is sexism in video game development. We must address the fact that making female characters weak is teaching male players that women are weak and female players that women should act weak. The two guilty tropes in video games are that women should a. serve as support characters, or b. be damsels in distress for the male character to save. We will examine two examples of this poisonous role in the video game world, so as to avoid them in the future.
